Roof Slates Creaking

Even the sturdiest floors sometimes require maintenance and repair and slate is no exception.

New build house 18 months old. However time and weather will leave their mark on a slate roof and slates can become damaged or loose. Loose stales are more often the result of the fixing nails failing usually. The wood frame under your roof experiences temperature changes from the outdoor air because the attic does not receive much heating or air conditioning.

Bed frames made from strips of wood are attractive but sometimes they squeak as you shift on the mattress. With ordinary foot traffic slate can loosen or lift and hard. Every slate on a roof overlaps other slates and is therefore angled and fragile see photo above. Creaking wheezing or popping sounds happen at nighttime due to cooler weather.

During the day the wood expands. The builder has brought in the roofing contractor who seems to have no idea what is causing it. When it is windy there is a creaking noise from around the edges of the roof area which is heard very distinctly in the bedrooms. Damaged slates are usually due to the roof settling frost or wind damage or things falling onto them this could be.

When walked on there is a good chance that the slate will crack and the bottom part of the slate will fall out see photos below. Applying the right lubricant and replacing cracked or weak pieces of wood will prevent the slats from squeaking underneath the pressure of your mattress.
