The width of metal panels will determine the rafter spacing. In the past the majority of roof structures were of wooden construction but over the past 15 to 20 years there has been a vast shift away from wood to metal mainly steel roof construction. In timber construction purlins are nailed to the rafter or supporting trusses while in steel roof construction they are welded or bolted to the rafters or trusses by the means of cleats.

Roof purlin are members used to directly support roof sheeting materials and could be made of timber or steel. The metal roof purlins spacing must be done correctly within narrow tolerances. Fasten the purlin with 16d common nails into each vertical rafter. The wider the roofing panels the greater spacing distance you should put.

Purlins are non pressure treated 1 x 4 x 12 lumber that is installed on to the roof in a specific layout pattern and screw pattern. Where the end purlin spacing is less than 800mm an adjustable end brace with a bolted end cleat is available as twisting of the end cleat is not practical. The adjustable brace offers up to 20mm of adjustment. The purlin is adjusted into line and the 12mm diameter hex flange bolts on the brace tightened.

The roof support system is a ridgepole and either rafters which run perpendicular from the top of the walls to the ridge or purlins which run parallel to the ridge. Low profile hex head has a smooth surface to ensure that there is no damage to the membrane. As structural members they resist loads. There is a chance of damaging roofing sheets if you are failed to do so.

20 mm drill point allows the fastener to be drilled through the purlin before the threads engage into the standing seam metal roof.
